Who Am I? Conservation
Officer Clyde Armstead I am a West Virginia State Conservation Officer or what most folks refer to as a Game Warden. I am first and foremost a sworn police officer with statewide authority and can enforce all state laws with the same authority as the State Police. We are also commissioned by the U.S. Department of Interior and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service as Deputy U. S. Fish and Wildlife Agents with the authority to enforce Federal Fish and Wildlife laws. We have to have a 4 year college degree or 4 years experience as a sworn law enforcement officer to qualify for the position. We are the oldest state law enforcement agency in WV, having been founded in 1897. Upon graduation from the WV State Police Academy we must spend one full year on probation with a Field Training Officer. We are also the only law enforcement agency in WV that requires all sworn officers to be able to pass a swimming test to be hired as we are dedicated to water patrol on all public waters in the state. I grew up in Roane County and attended Spencer High School and WVU-P. My law enforcement career began as a Roane County Deputy Sheriff in 1979 after 4 ½ years in the U.S. Navy. I also joined the WV Air National Guard’s 130th Security Police Flight at Charleston’s Yeager Airport in 1979 and retired in 1998 as the Superintendent of Combat Arms Training and Maintenance Unit. I have been a conservation officer since 1989 and am presently stationed in Jackson County. Other duty stations have included Hancock, Kanawha and Wood Counties. I do not intend to change my address any more. |
